The Company
A market leading Marine Engineering firm based in the South of England, who have created some of the industry's most exciting and innovative plans. They have keen plans to expand and have already begun R&D on another new exciting and innovative product to bring to market. Ideally located on the South Coast, next to the UK's marine hub. With offices located right upon the beachfront.
The role
The Director of Engineering will report to the Chief Technology Officer and help take our growing engineering department to the next level. We are seeking an extremely hands on and driver leader who will lead a department of specialist engineers based in Cornwall.The department is responsible for the engineering design, test and productisation of our marine-based power generation, electric and hybrid drive products.
You will take responsibility for:
- Create and build a direction for the company by leading and improving the engineering strategy.
- Drive technical brilliance in the engineering team through strong leadership
- Be responsible for the product design reviews, testing and implementation with multi-functional stakeholders from inception all the way to manufacture.
- Working closely with engineering staff to produce mechanical designs including drive trains, mounting hardware, electronics systems, test equipment and production jigs and fixtures.
- Complete assembly, installation and test activities on R&D and production projects.
- Leading design teams whilst remaining hands on within the design function utilising CAE tools such as Solidworks to produce 3D models and detailed production/assembly drawings
- Apply geometric tolerances and dimensions in the production of detailed manufacturing drawings, figures and any other relevant information.
- Use simulation, analysis and hand calculations to verify engineering designs.
- See product through from design through to test and validation, overseeing the testing and validation of the product and implementing installation procedures
What you need
It is ESSENTIAL for the successful candidate to have the following:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in the field of mechanical engineering (or equivalent)
- You have a data-driven, evidence-based, and transparent approach to making decisions
- You are technically exceptional and can challenge Technical Leads on key decisions where appropriate.
- You have experience mentoring and supporting engineering leaders and teams, fostering great engineering practices
- You will have experience working with innovative technologies and ideally taking products from inception through to manufacture and full-scale production.
- You will have demonstrated an understanding of leading design teams and have experience designing innovative products, ideally within the powertrain, power generation, propulsion industries.
Other DESIRABLE skills include:
- Expert understanding of CAE (Solidworks) and 3d Modelling
- Previous experience within the powertrain, power generation or propulsion industries
- Skilled communicator and experienced leader with a keen passion for clean energy and innovative thinking
